Well this is strange. It appears Disney is planning a comedy about male synchronized swimmers. We get wind of this project from the underwater caves of Yahoo:
Disney is developing a comedy that pokes fun at the world of synchronized swimming. “Synchronicity” will center on male synchronized swimmers and follow in the steps — or strokes — of sports comedies from the likes of Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller. Disney-based producer Scott Rudin will develop the project.
The fictional sport of male synchronized swimming — only women can compete in the sport at the Olympics — has been a popular comedic target dating back to Harry Shearer and Martin Short’s well-known “Saturday Night Live” skit in 1984.
When I woke up this morning, I didn’t expect to post about synchronized swimmers, that is for certain. I wonder if Disney’ s going to bring us a modern old yeller tragedy where one of the swimmers has a tragic accident and the team is forced to go on, whilst we watch on with moistened eyes.
If they are going to do this film in the vein of a Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller comedy I’ m guessing it will be about a jackass team of underdogs that eventually gain the affection of planet earth. My question is, will Disney be able to pull this off while remaining kid friendly? I think the best way to pull off the family friendly angle is to have the swim team be a group of clean living Mormons from Utah; I think this would be both hilarious and safe. Aqua missionaries preaching the gospel through synchronized swimming! The could even swim to songs sung by the Mormon Tabernacle choir!
International friends – how would you like to see this movie play out?
