And in that category of Sequels you didn’t ask for, New Line has managed to convince original Hairspay scribe John Waters to come up with a treatment for Hairspray 2.
Planning to return are director/choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film.No cast has been engaged yet, and none of the stars of Hairspray had sequel options. But the studio hopes to reunite the original cast in a film that will be ready for release by Warner Bros. in mid-July 2010.
I do like that they are getting the guy who wrote the story to begin with to take on the sequel. He is already intimately aware of all the characters beyond anything a fan could grasp. But then who says that Hairspray 2 would even HAVE any of the original cast. Remember Grease 2?
I can see how this would be considered a good idea to the Hollywood machine. Hairspray was a success, and a great movie. I just love it to death. So it makes sense that Hollywood would attempt to target the same crowd and get another does of money.
Nikki Blonsky was so appealing in this movie that you would expect it to catapult her to fame, but so far she’s been off the radar. Could she return to give us more of that boundless energy she brought to the 2007 film?
I get pretty skeptical about sequels to begin with. But the producing team is the same so with any luck we might just get something special here.
