Looks like Battlestar Galactica director and producer, Michael Rymer is lining himself up to bring Witchblade to the big screen. And why not? Every other superhero book seems to be making the jump.
Coming Soon brings us news confirming a story broke by BloodyDisgustinglast month.
Michael Rymer will direct and co-produce Witchblade, a feature film adaptation of the Top Cow comic.
The fantasy involves a jewel-encrusted gauntlet that bestows extraordinary powers upon the possessor, one chosen female from each generation.
Witchblade owes a lot of its success to its scantilly clad heroine of the comic book. I dare to think that a feature film would do well to remember this. Personally I think a movie based entirely on an armour covered appendage suit on a naked woman might make for a great Heavy Metal Magazine pinup, the story behind it has to be a lot meatier before I buy in.
As an avid comic collector, I find myself turning my nose up at these types of characters. Every cover of Witchblade was just another pinup of the naked woman in demon armour. At the shop I frequent, we used to call that fanwank. Even the TV Series managed to fail while putting clothes on the star. Mind you that might have only been part of its failings. I saw a handful of episodes and nothing drew me in.
So a feature film based on a fluff pinup comic with a Battlestar Galactica director? Can it work?
Guess we will have to wait to see more.
