Ghost Rider 2 Is Coming

Considering the first Ghost Rider movie wasn’t that much of a box office smash (it made a respectable $116 million domestically) and the fact that it wasn’t very well received either by critics or audiences alike, you’d be forgiven for believing there would never be a Ghost Rider 2. You’d be forgiven… but you’d be wrong, at least according to Nicolas Cage.

In a recent interview, Cage confirms that there is going to be a Ghost Rider 2 and that plans are already underway for it. As a matter of fact, they even have a chunk of the plot set out. The folks at MTV Splash Page give us this:

“There have been talks and good ones with where to go with the character,” explained Cage. “It looks like it will take place in Europe and the character will work with the church. It’ll be a completely new experience. It’s exciting.”

While the film is still in its very early stages — no major “official” announcements have been made — Cage was happy to share with MTV everything he knew so far about the next adventures of Johnny Blaze — a former stuntman who, after a deal with Mephistopheles, becomes the vengeance-seeking Ghost Rider. “It hasn’t progressed to [who the next villain will be] yet to be able to say, but I do know it will be shot in Europe and there will be some sort of connection working with different religious figures,” he hinted.

I’m really not sure what to think about this. Yes, the first one more than made it’s money back… and yes, with the success of films like The Dark Knight and Iron Man, it’s a hot time to be in the comic book movie business. But having said all that, people flat out HATED the first Ghost Rider movie.

You may say, “but John, most people hated the first Hulk film, and the second one did ok”. Fair enough, but people didn’t hate the first Hulk like they hated Ghost Rider, and secondly the second Hulk film was a re-start with a whole new cast. This Ghost Rider project looks like just a sequel. I can’t imagine why they think this one would do well.

Have to wait and see I guess.
