Mr. Depp is said to be playing the role of a household pet in the upcoming CGI extravaganza known as Rango. We get the following scoop about the film, thanks to the news masters at Variety:
Johnny Depp will reunite with “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski on “Rango,” an animated pic that Paramount will finance and distribute. Depp will voice the lead character, a household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self.
“Rango” aims to use cutting-edge animation techniques that “will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny‘s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature,” Verbinski said.
Well it sounds like they are going to use motion capture on Monsieur Depp in order to make his emotive expressions shine through the animation. Verbinski is teaming up with the wizards at ILM again to bring us this feature. I am no fan of the Pitrates franchise – but the special effects ILM threw at us were incredible. It will be interesting to see what kind of animated surprises these guys will bring us in Rango.
The story itself sounds pretty run of the mill. I’m glad that Rango discovers his true self, but would prefer he start the film as a confident, examined entity. This film is slotted for release March 2011 and we will be sure to keep you updated along the way with updates, pics, teasers and trailers.
Rango is a cool name for a pet, I just wonder what kind of pet Rango will be? Rango the rhino has a nice ring to it…
International friends – what animal do you think Rango will be?
