Rumour hit the net that Russell Crowe was taking on the role of Sherlock’s faithful companion Watson in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.
The Sun was reporting that Russell Crowe was all set to play Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, instantly making Watson ten times more interesting than he’s ever been allowed to be onscreen.
But just as all movie writers began pondering how incredibly brilliant it would be to see Crowe and Robert Downey Jr. pair up onscreen, perhaps as the Riggs and Murtaugh of Victorian London, it was dismissed entirely by none other than Guy Ritchie.
I have been pretty pumped about seeing Russell Crowe take on the iconic Sherriff of Nottingham, but that’s been delayed by the changing colour of leaves (not kidding) we are teased with Crowe taking on yet another character of supporting role and making them interesting.
Oh well. Not going to happen.
On one hand I think that it is a good thing that Crowe isn’t taking on the sidekick role. As silly as the proposed ninja Sherlock that Ritchie insists on moving forward with, Robert Downey Jr needs a sidekick that won’t overshadow him. I honestly think that Crowe would steal the show.
I’d love to see them play off each other but I think that in the end Downey would be Crowe’s sidekick.
