Will Smith has scored perhaps his greatest role to date as Taharqa: Pharaoh Of Egypt! We get the following skinny from our friends at the movieweb:
Braveheart writer Randall Wallace is set to write The Last Pharaoh, with Will Smith in mind to play Taharqa in Columbia’s drama about the pharaoh who battled Assyrian invaders in ancient Egypt.
According to Variety, Smith has long wanted to play the pharaoh and brought Wallace the Taharqa story. The film will focus on his battles with Assyrian leader Esarhaddon starting in 677 B.C.
Ancient Egypt Vs. Assyria on the big screen sound good to me. It appears Smith had a hunger to play the Nubian Pharaoh, and it was kick-ass that Wallace was able to smith a script for Smith upon his request. With luck the excitement and vision of both men will translate into excellence.
If this has “Braveheart level” battle scenes, I will more than excited. Ancient Egypt is a fantastic place, and a perfect setting for an epic war film. It’ s a very alien culture that has its roots on earth, and I think that’s what gives it such an appeal. History is full of magnificent tales, and Its always a treat to see them adapted (well) to the screen.
We will be sure to keep you up to speed on the progress of this film, and I am already looking forward to the still photos.
