The Chinese answer to Disney’s Mulan will be under way shortly. We get wind of the production start and following news thanks to the professionals at Variety:
Chinese who have long felt upstaged by Disney will get their own version of “Mulan” now that Hong Kong helmer Jingle Ma is taking it on as his next project.
Ma, whose update of the classic “Butterfly Lovers” story has taken in nearly $4 million in B.O. in China so far, confirmed that the project about legendary warrior princess Hua Mulan is due to begin lensing in February but was unable to give any more details for contractual reasons. The pic reportedly has a budget of HK$50 million ($6.45 million).
Fuck you Disney, The People’s Republic is going to show you how Mulan is done!
I have yet to see the Disney picture Mulan, but I think that the rivalry that has developed is good news for fans of the tale. With luck China will get a Mulan film they can be proud of and the rest of the world can enjoy the retelling of the tale.
I am uncertain if this film will get the subtitle treatment and make the rounds internationally. I certainly hope so, buzz about this project has been circling round the web for quite some time now and I am quite curious to check it out.
