We have some information regarding the timeline for The Hobbit thanks to the following interview excerpt provided by our friends at the movieweb:
When does filming for The Hobbit begin?
Guillermo del Toro: It will begin in 2010 and we will shoot for about 370 days or so…
At what age did you first read The Hobbit?
Guillermo del Toro: I believe it was between 10 years old and 11 years old. My first copy of it is dated as printed in 1973 and I know I bought it shortly after being published by a great publishing house called MINOTAURO which was (in my childhood years) like the CRITERION COLLECTION of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.

This is going to be a year and a bit of non stop filming in Middle Earth. I would love to get onto this set and would try my very best to steal a suit of chain-mail. I don’t know what the hell happened to all the armor/weapons from the first LOTR, but If any of you work in a warehouse that stores this shit – feel free to mail some to me. In exchange I will give you my eternal thanks and 2 pints of my blood.
I am excited about this film very very much and am glad that the wheels have begun to turn on this bus. I am interested in seeing Del Toro’s imprint on this story under the supervision of Mr. Jackson. I have high hopes for this team up and am wondering if the collective will cause something even greater that the sum of all parts.
Smaug’s days are numbered.
