We get our first look at Angelina Jolie from the new spy thriller Salt. Evelyn A Salt is a spy who is accused of being a Russian sleeper agent, and is now going rogue to prove her innocence.
Now we get our first look on how Jolie will appear in the role, and what would a superspy be if they couldn’t change their appearance?
“She’s a character you never know,” says Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who also produced Transformers and the upcoming G.I. Joe. “People who think they know the real her may or may not. Those who think they can tell whether she’s in a disguise also may or may not. “You’re supposed to be kept guessing. She tells you her agenda, but are you supposed to believe it?”
This was the role intended for Tom Cruise (as Edwin Salt), and I might have liked it better as a vehicle for Tom. He plays the superspy/secret agent thing really well, and frankly the guy could use a leg up. Though I am officially back on his side after Tropic Thunder, but still at arms length hoping crazy isn’t contagious.
But Jolie ALSO plays those roles very well, so I think the movie would be good either way.
I like the idea that we won’t ever know for sure who’s side she is on. She is trying to clear her name as a Russian sleeper agent, but is she trying to remove a stain or prove there never was one? I always thought the double agent concept was a risky one. Like marrying your mistress. She was willing to cheat to be with you, so can you ever fully expect her not to cheat again? But maybe she is rising above it all and trying to remove a part of her past that will ruin her present where her loyalties are now clear.
