As a rule, in Hollywood if a movie makes a pile of money they make a sequel to try and get another pile of money. Comic book movies have broken the stereotype and while sequels tend to pale in comparison, this genre has offered up some of the most successful sequels ever.
So with Watchmen coming out this weekend, if it turns into a wild success (I think it will be modest) will Hollywood push for a sequel??
“There’s no way I would be involved in a sequel or prequel,” said director Zack Snyder, who turned the graphic novel “300” into a 2007 blockbuster.
“Will they make one? I have no idea how you would. The work is the work. This movie is about ideas. Anything else you would do, if you did a sequel to it, misses the point entirely of what ‘Watchmen’ is,” he said.
I think Snyder hits it right on the head. The movie is about ideas. Despite some strong characters, the movie focuses on the ideas behind them instead of the characters themselves. Once the idea is explored all we have are some characters that likely wouldn’t stand up on their own. Sometimes a story is just a single tale. It doesn’t NEED to be expanded upon.
Highlander said it all. There can only be one. And in the case of that franchise there really should only have been one.
I do find it interesting that Zack Snyder would be saying things like there is “no way I would be involved” after he was rumoured to be waiting on Miller’s sequel to 300, another story that really had no need for a sequel (and even less likely to make sense if they did)
If they are that eager to bring more of Miller’s work to the screen, I would LOVE to see Ronin. Don’t bother with trying to make sequels where there doesn’t need to be.
Just don’t let him direct.
