I’m actually a pretty big fan of the old 1993 Sylvester Stallone flick “Cliffhanger“. It was fun, had a terrific bad guy (John Lithgow), a solid supporting cast (like Michael Rooker) and that opening scene where the girl falls to her death was one of the best WTF openings to a movie I’ve ever seen.
So yes, Cliffhanger was a great little movie… but it’s not like it’s an all time classic. It’s not like it was a franchise. It’s not like it’s Star Trek.
Anyway, for some reason the studios have decided to make Cliffhanger again. I’m fine with that in general… remakes are ok in my book under the right circumstances. But they’re not calling this a remake. They’re calling it a reboot. Listen to this:
In a story from Variety, the mini-major StudioCanal is teaming up with Neal Moritz’s L.A.-based Original Films for a remake of Cliffhanger. The original film was an action-adventure thriller that took place in the mountains. It was originally directed by Renny Harlin in 1993.
The redo will follow a group of young climbers. “Just as they rebooted Star Trek, we’re going to do the same with Cliffhanger, ” stated Moritz, who is slated to produce.
I’m sorry… did this guy just compare Cliffhanger to Star Trek? One is a decades long running franchise with 10 movies and no less than 5 television series spanning generations. Cliffhanger is a one shot movie. What exactly is there to “reboot”?
I know it’s just all semantics… but come on. A remake is not the same as a reboot.
Ok, with that little rant aside, I still don’t like the idea of this. Why remake a movie that’s only 16 years old? Oh well… maybe it’ll be fun. We’ll keep our eyes on this. (source: MovieWeb)
