The story of The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha is two fold. On one hand it is a classic 17th Century novel. On the other, it is a thorn in Terry Gilliam’s side for the last 9 years since his effort to bring the story to the silver screen failed.
Well time has finally served Gilliam well as his long lost project looks to be finally a reality.
Gilliam has hooked up with Thomas to finally bring his long-blighted take on the tale of the Spanish knight. Screenwriter Tony Grisoni (“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”) has worked with Gilliam to reimagine the legend, and the script revolves around a filmmaker who is charmed into Quixote’s eternal quest for his ladylove, becoming an unwitting Sancho Panza.
The move uniting Gilliam with Thomas and his Recorded Picture Co. banner is the latest twist in a moviemaking saga almost as epic as Cervantes’ 17th century classic on which it is based.
Nearly a decade ago, the original attempt at this film ran dry and it never happened.
Now Gilliam will be teaming up with Producer Jeremy Thomas to actually make it happen. If I knew nothing more about this project that alone would be enough. That he held on hope against hope that this movie would finally come about is inspiring and makes it worth the attention.
The 17th century story upon which this movie finds its foundation is often considered one of the greatest literary works ever published.
I only hope that this long devoted wait means that the story will find justice under Gilliam and Thomas.
