Robert Rodriguez’s Barbarealla Remake Is Dead

I’m not a huge Robert Rodriguez fan by any stretch of the imagination, but you do have to hand it to the guy for his willingness to take risks and do some pretty crazy stuff. Even though I much prefer Quentin Tarantino as a director, I found his “Planet Terror” movie VASTLY more entertaining than QT’s “Death Proof” snore fest in Grindhouse.

For some time now Rodriguez has been developing a remake of Barbarella. If you recall, Rose McGowan (Rodriguez’s screw partner) was originally set for the lead role with later rumors surfacing that the studio wanted Jessica Alba for the part (neither of which I was thrilled with).

Well, it’s all moot now. The Barbarella remake is officially dead.

Apparently the studio dropped the project over rising production costs concerns, and then the only place he could get financing was from a German company who wanted him to do production and post-production all in Germany. Rodriguez has 5 kids and didn’t think he could be away overseas that long (good man… I mean… aside from drilling your little bimbo actress behind your wife’s back that is). So that’s it. It’s dead.

With Hollywood being remake happy for recognizable franchises, I have no doubt that we’ll be talking Barbarella again within the next 3-4 years, but probably with other names attached. Too bad… I was kinda curious about this one. (source: JoBlo)
