I am surprised that only recently I discovered that Joe Shuster, the other half of the creators of Superman was a rather kinky fetish artist, and a book called Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Joe Shuster was not only published by Craig Yoe, detailing his work, but the rights to that book have been picked up to potentially be made into a movie.
The Gotham Group has picked up the movie rights to Craig Yoe’s wonderful Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-Creator Joe Shuster, which reveals Shuster’s work on the controversial BDSM underground comic series The Nights of Terror from the 1950s, during a time where he had become estranged from Superman’s publisher DC Comics. The comics – which feature lookalikes of Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor in various scenes of S&M play – were named as an inspiration behind a crime spree of the era that involved murder, torture and humiliation of victims.
I didn’t know that the underground comic work was something that was named as inspiriation for a crime spree, so perhaps that will be the basis of a film.
There is little to a story about a guy who co-created the most upstanding and morally clean Superman turning out to have some kinky fetishes. But a crime spree that is inspired by his art might offer a great 50s crime drama flick.
We will have to see where they go with this.
