Looks like Hasbro is riding the money train with their properties and licensing anything and everything they can to be adapted to film. And right now that money train might be named B&O or Reading Railroad because they are going full steam ahead with a Monopoly Movie!
ComingSoon quotes an interview with Hasbro pimp Brian Goldner
What’s your take on “Monopoly”?
Goldner: “Monopoly” has this wonderful history. If you’ll remember, “Monopoly” was literally invented at The [Great] Depression, so that idea, this fiction that’s really there, this non-fiction fiction that’s really there in the game and in the fact that there’s such great roots to this brand and the history of the brand, we bring this to life with a story about families.
I don’t know what Monopoly has to do with families. I have played the game litterally hundreds of times in my life and never once did I imagine the game as anything more than my pile of brightly coloured funds controlled by the CEO of my virtual empire (who was usually a pewter terrier) There were no stories to be told. Just money changing hands.
I talked about this before, but I just get annoyed when they take a perfectly good script (presumably) and then squeeze it into the mold of an existing franchise. But its not always a bad thing. Sometimes you HAVE to do that and I would imagine that this is the perfect opportunity.
My only hope in this vague product related adaptation is being helmed by Ridley Scott.
