The Magneto film appears to still be on the table, and while Dark Knight writer David Goyer looks like he would take the big seat behind the camera should it happen, Gavin Hood – Director of XMen Origins: Wolverine – would love a shot.
MTV Splashpage quotes Gavin Hood:
“I think the character of Magneto is still a phenomenally interesting character,” Hood told MTV News while discussing last week’s release of “Wolverine” on DVD and Blu-Ray.
“Absolutely, if I was asked I’d take an interest,” the director said. “But the truth is I haven’t been asked”
And I hope to hell he won’t be asked either.
I thought Gavin did an OK job with Wolverine, but the film was light and borderline campy – something you cant do at all with Magneto. Wolverine was filled with just as much terrible shit as there was good, but Hood didn’t have much to work with since the writing was mostly crap, effects were crap and the acting was hit or miss.
Magneto is one of those films I would be dying to see, but has the most potential for failure. The character is SO complex, and is easily my favourite “Villain” of any comic book. It would be very hard to show this character and succeed in making it an appealing story. My favourite parts of the X-films have always been the contrast of visions between Xavier and Magneto.
Frankly much of his history implies that a film based on his life would be a pure character drama, and not a bang out action flick, which would be a change of gears for the X-Films.
