I have been looking forward to Christina Aguilera’s Burlesque despite my apprehension to musical stars being given lead roles in films. Christina will be playing a singing and dancing scantilly clad performer. I don’t think that is acting.
Well now we get news that the tasty Kristen Bell will be slinking into lingerie and showing some sass on stage as Christina Aguilera’s rival.
Kristen Bell will star as Christina Aguilera’s rival in “Burlesque,” Screen Gems’ musical drama being directed by Steve Antin.
“Burlesque” centers on the journey of an ambitious small-town girl (Aguilera) with a big-town voice who finds love and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret.” (Aguilera has guested in cabarets for the Pussycat Dolls.)
Bell will play Nikki, the loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction at the club who spirals out of control when Aguilera’s character suddenly gets the spotlight.
There is an obvious paralell to this and Showgirls. Aspiring performer wants to be a showgirl – er Burlesque dancer, and the current star of the show feels threatened by her.
But all I can think of is Aguilera as a Burlesque dancer and singer (hardly acting for her) and as if that wasn’t appealing enough Kristen Bell as a Burlesque dancer too? Good god, I don’t know that my inner teenager can .. contain himself.
