With all the buzz around Spiderman getting a reboot, I was surprised that they are already name dropping a director. But I guess they want to get on this so they don’t loose their rights and Marvel gets it back. (If its going to get rebooted, I wish they would hand it back or share or something)
Anyways, despite names like James Cameron, David Fincher and Wes Anderson being thrown around the lead contender for the comfy chair is Marc Webb (maybe for the pun in his name??)
Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that Sony has already met with Marc Webb to helm the new film, which will be released in the summer 2012 in 3D. The main reason why the studio thinks Webb is a good fit is because his “500 Days of Summer” film portrayed young people the same way that Sony wants Spidey portrayed in the movie, which will take place during the character’s younger high-school days.
Awesome. So they want to make sure they get a director who can handle the social atmosphere of a highschool setting. Ok, valid approach.
But what about a director who can handle action? Who can instruct an actor to react properly to a greenscreen and a tennis ball? Who has an attention to comic timing?
And how about one that has the balls to stand up to Sony when they want to make Felicia Hardy the Vultress the Daughter of the Daily Bugle’s Editor, making Peter Parker’s boss the Vulture.
And if they DO have a J.Jonah Jamison, who the HELL is going to play that part better than J.K. Simmons????
Word also says that Matthew Vaughn (formerly attached to Thor, now directing Kickass) wants the gig, and frankly I would sooner see it go to him so we dont get a sappy drama director and we get someone who has a grasp on superhero action.
Ok, my geek hurts… I have to go lie down.
