This weekend was no surprise with the family friendly How to Train your Dragon pushing Alice aside for the first week since it came out, while the top adult comedy Hot Tub Time Machine watches the fight from the sidelines in third place.
Weekend of March 26 – 28th How to Train Your Dragon $43,300,000 Opening
Alice in Wonderland $17,300,000 4wks
Hot Tub Time Machine $13,650,000 Opening
The Bounty Hunter $12,400,000 2wks
Diary of a Wimpy Kid $10,000,000 2 wks
How to Train your Dragon deservedly fills the top spot this weekend, and I am kind of surprised to see Bounty Hunter still up in the top 5 as I figured that would have dropped off like a stone.
In a side note, on the way out of Hot Tub Time Machine I was in the bathroom (thats what you do after the movie… go pee) and two guys were there having just left the same show I was in. Clearly they knew each other as one explains he was there to make sure the film was ok to bring his kids to.
Ok, that’s diligent and all – very responsible dad. But before I could chime in uninvited, thankfully his buddy at the urinal next to him (seriously – who chats at the urinal? Is nothing sacred?) says, “Dude, the movie was rated R!” (Canada’s R is US NC-17) Like a simple peek in the newspaper listings wouldn’t have saved this guy a trip to the theater. At least it was a decently funny movie so not a complete waste of time. But really not something I am taking my 12 year old to see.
