Todays list is once again looking a little shy, but there are some classic titles getting the Blu treatment today as well, so that should flesh out that itch for you collectors. As for me, I have only one title that is a must have this week. But you will have to read below to find out.
Defendor Reality intersects with delusion in the mind of Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson), a regular man who adopts a superhero persona known as Defendor, and combs the city streets at night in search of his arch-enemy, Captain Industry. In his attempts to combat crime and bring down this drug and weapons dealer who he mistakenly blames for the death of his mother, Defendor ends up befriending a young prostitute, Katerina Debrofkowitz (Kat Dennings). Armed with unconventional weapons of mass confusion, aided by his new friend, Defendor proves that everyone is capable of making a difference as he puts his life on the line. This has that Kick-Ass flavour all over it with the same theme of a man delusioned into becoming a real superhero in a real world. This was filmed mostly in my hometown of Hamilton Ontario, so I am likely to rent this one tonight just to check it out. But it does look like a lot of fun and can tide me over until Kick-Ass comes out. |
Pirate Radio Broadcasting live 24/7 from an old tanker anchored in the middle of the North Sea (just beyond British jurisdiction), Radio Rock sends out a vibrant and unifying signal to millions across the nation, ranging in age from wide-eyed pre-teens secretly tuning in long past their bedtimes to everyday people in need of a musical pick-me-up. As the ship sails on and rocks out, what Carl and the freewheeling, free-loving Radio Rock gang don’t know is that back in London, landlocked government minister Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh) has embarked on a vehement crusade to silence their signal—permanently. To stay afloat and keep their devoted audience plugged in, the crew will have to band together and trust in the power of music like never before. Looks like a fun story of rebllion and responsibility, and yet another film with Gemma Arterton in it (though it appears minor) but the rest of the cast looks amazing. It has my vote for at least a rent, but I suspect if I enjoy as much as I think I might – this will get bought. |
The Slammin Salmon Slammin’ Cleon Salmon, the former Heavyweight Champion of the world, is a mean, crazy, and sometimes infantile bull of a man, who happens to owe $20,000 to the head of the Japanese Yakuza and needs to come up with the money tonight. So he challenges the waiters in the restaurant that he owns, The Slammin’ Salmon, a high end, boxing themed seafood eatery in Miami, to sell more food than they’ve ever sold in their lives, with the top waiter earning $10,000, the loser getting a broken rib sandwich. As the hours pass, the action becomes more chaotic as Cleon shows up to supervise the contest and changes the rules on a minute to minute basis. Its been no secret that I have been itching for this film for a LONG time. It didn’t get a theatrical release which was a shame. So today its out on Blu and its an instant buy for me even though I have yet to see it. This looks hilarious. Its like the Broken Lizard crew re-made Waiting. How can this go wrong? |
A Nightmare on Elm Street Nancy is having nightmares about a frightening, badly-scarred figure who wears a glove with razor-sharp “finger knives”. She soon discovers that her friends are having similar dreams. When the kids begin to die, Nancy realizes that she must stay awake to survive. Uncovering the secret identity of the dream killer and his connection with the children of Elm Street, the girl plots to draw him out into the real world. No kids, this isn’t Spaceballs where the movie comes out before the film is finished being made. This is the 1984 original classic Nightmare on Elm Street. I am looking forward to seeing this on Blu, if not to relive this classic, but to see the 50 minute documentary on the disc about the making of the film among other special features. |
