With the calm before the storm, and by storm I mean the launch of the Summer Blockbuster Season, this second to last weekend of Spring releases looks to soften April’s Boxoffice with a Dragon on top.
How to Train Your Dragon, after 5 weeks in its run returns to the Number One spot after a flurry of mediocre cash grabbers fails to inspire crowds at the theater.
Boxoffice Mojo reports the estimates for this weekend:
How to Train Your Dragon – $15,025,000 – 5wks
The Back-Up Plan – $12,250,000 – Opening
Date Night – $10,600,000 – 3wks
The Losers – $9,605,000 – Opening
Kick-Ass – $9,500,000 – 2wks
Dragon still tops out the films I would want to see in the theater, ranking as my favourite film this year so far.
Despite comments like “Best Superhero Movie Ever Made!!!!” with precisely that many exclamation points, Kick-Ass was good, but not so good that it would come back from its peak last week. Very few movies do better after their first week, and Kick-Ass is not going to be one of them.
Date Night is holding on strong in the mess offering an alternative, but still losing out to the charm of a J-Lo RomCom that doesn’t deserve so high a ranking, but then I thought it was going to be good after seeing the trailers too.
The Losers hits hard with its all-style-no-substance flash in the pan. Pity that it didn’t get more attention than this. Even though the plot was flimsy, the movie was a lot of fun to watch.
What did you see this weekend?
