Favreau says Iron Man 3 Villain Has to be Mandarin

Iron Man 2 is just breaking into the North American market this week and already director Jon Favreau is all up and talking about Iron Man 3.

Specifically he says Iron Man 3 will “have to” feature the Mandarin as the villain.

Screen Junies shares:

If Favreau has his way, Tony Stark will be taking on The Mandarin in the next installment of the popular franchise.

“You’ve got to do The Mandarin”, says the director, who has been teasing this in the films already with tiny references to the Ten Ring organization, “but the problem is, the way he’s depicted in the comic books… you don’t want to see that.”

I really think an adaptation of the Mandarin won’t have him dancing about in silk pajamas. They will adapt him to be a more film friendly image. It also presents a villain that isnt using Tony’s technology against him. We have seen two variations on that theme in two films. If they did it again, it might grow tiresome. Mandarin has his own tech.

Mandarin is often depicted as supernatural, but in reality he is a master of science reverse engineering of found Makluuan Alien technology which is found in his Ten Rings of Power. Each ring grants him different abilities, combined with his martial arts mastery of focusing Chi to be able to punch through metals make him a formidable opponent for Iron Man.

But more interesting will be how he will be presented as a rival for Stark as well as Iron Man.

  1. I think this is the right way to go, we’ve already had him fighting newer versions of himself. good move for sure. heck id even be excited to see Fing Fang Foom. I thinkt he more out there we get the more exciting and broad the universe can get, and it will make Thor make a little more sense.

  2. And I am sorry:

It doesnt HAVE to be Mandarin. There are about 80 other good Iron Man villains that will fit the story better.

I know he wants to make Mandarin be the villain so he shows up with Loki, Abomination and Leader in the Avengers for a super evil group, but for the IRON MAN 3 movie, there are so many other roputes to take then this guy, seriously.

  3. i am 100% sure they will give the Mandarin a perfectly realistic*** vibe and not a magic voodoo characteristic

***reralistic to the Iron Man movie universe Jon Favrou has established. Hence, very technologically savy with its own limit of logic and common sence with science

And yes, he better loose the fucking robe for the movie.

No ones ever gotten laid in one of those since ‘Nam

    FACTS:

    1) They wont call him Mandarin.

    2) He wont be Chinese, obviously Arabic.

    3) He will most likely be Arabic.

    4) They MAY drop in the name “Mandarin” to refer to him once as a joke or something. But they will call him by his Arabic name and mention 10 RINGS a lot

    1. Please dont say “FACTS” to things that you can’t know. Those are not facts, they are your guesses.

And I doubt they will change him to be Arabic. There is no reason at all to do that.

      1. In the comic books, Tony goes back to China to investigate on the weapons they have and destroy them.

But in the movie, he didnt get kidnapped, escaped, and came back for the weapons in China, it was in the midle east.

THE WHOLE POINT of the Mandarin- is that he was involved with those weapons- because after finding the dragon alien with the 10 rings he wanted to turn all weapons against men.

It has to be the ones he destroyed in Iraq that connect to Tony Stark because those are the ones he blew up and got him kidnapped in the first one.

But youre right, they should just make all of this happen in China so everything that happened before makes no sense and doesnt connect.

We havent been in war with China since Pluto was a planet, they already made his right hand man Arabic instead of Chinese. And all his henchmen

  4. hmm..so james was right about those ring references in the iron man films 1 an 2, i just can’t seem to find them. But if they redesign the mandarins robe style clothes they can go for the style shown in the cartoon: Iron man armored adventures.
    Film 3 needs the mandarin.

  5. I dont want him to fight another foe in a robotic suit, it’s already grown thin, Mandarin IS what we expect next.take the whips out of Whiplashes hand at the end of 2 and it’s basically Iron Monger. I thought they were gonna bled both Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo in one villan at the end there being that Whiplash was Russian and all. OH WELL

  6. Mandarin is the right way to go. Yes, his character does fall into the magical/fantasy side of the comic but all of this falls under the Marvel Universe. If its presented in the correct manner I dont think there will be a problem. We know Stark can beat someone when it comes to technology…he’s a genius. Incorporating Mandarin will force Stark to really think outside the box in order to achieve a victory.

  7. Mandarin’s too magic / fantasy based. It’ll make Iron Man 3 flop. I’d say Tony Stark needs to continue fighting tech-savvy villains.

      1. Yeah that’s the thing, many people think that Mandarin is a mystical character, but he’s actually science based and a excellent martial artist. He’s also very business savvy and has at time taken power within the Chinese government. The Fu Man Chu outfit would have to go, but recent depictions of the character have shown him in regular business attire. They could pull a story line directly from comics, where Tony attempts to expand his business into China only to be opposed by the Mandarin on a business and personal level.

      2. Another thing to consider is that by the time IM3 comes out both Thor and the Avengers will have been release. The common movie goer will have already been introduced to the mystical side of the Marvel universe in those movies. So even if they do go the magical route with the Mandarin, it wont be new to people.
