In the news category I want to eloquently label “Well duh!” we get wind that the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise “On Stranger Tides” will be shot in 3D.
Of course it will be.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4 will be in 3D. However, before you get too upset and start ranting about how every movie is being released in 3D (although our name should let you know we encourage that!), you should know that Pirates 4 is being shot in that format and not converted after the fact.
You know, if you are going to make a movie in 3D, it should be SHOT in 3D. Doing so in post has its limitations and its not as effective of a tool.
But my bigger concern is that while I am not against this 3D craze, I don’t think that every big budget film needs to be in 3D. Visual movies like Alice in Wonderland and Tron or CG animated features. Sure. Even Avatar had an encompassing feeling to it thanks in part to the effect.
But what will be in Pirates of the Caribbean that makes it such a candidate for 3D??
Nothing.
And this is what concerns me.
