The very last weekend of the Spring Season had to offer, we see a horror film remake take the top spot finally pushing back How to Train your Dragon to the number two spot again.
Boxoffice Mojo reports the estimates:
A Nightmare on Elm Street – $32,205,000 – Opening
How to Train Your Dragon – $10,825,000 – 6wks
Date Night – $7,600,000 – 4wks
The Back-Up Plan – $7,240,000 – 2wks
Furry Vengeance – $6,500,000 – Opening
While I wasn’t surprised that Nightmare on Elm Street took first (matching its estimated production budget), I have a lot of respect for the competition like Date Night and Dragon, both showing they can hold on for the long run.
I was also surprised that Furry Vengeance even broke the Top 5. While I will never underestimate the value of a Family Friendly film (Remember the Squash!) when my own 7 year old says “Daddy, that looks stupid” I have to nod and agree.
But that will all change as this coming weekend marks the launch of the Summer season, and it looks like a fun one. Even with mixed reviews Iron Man 2 is already dominating foreign boxoffice raking an estimated $100million while US and Canadian audiences have yet to see it.
