Shrek Forever After naturally claimed the top spot, but not hitting as big as Dreamworks had hoped it would, though reps at the studio speculate it could have a slow burn with little decline in boxoffice over the next few weeks as school lets out.
And with three other films seeing their boxoffice attendance cut in half compared to last week – Iron Man 2, Robin Hood and Just Wright – the new brash comedy spoof MacGruber made an embarassing 6th place opener.
Boxoffice Mojo reports the estimates:
Shrek Forever After – $71,250,000 – Opening
Iron Man 2 – $26,600,000 – 3wks
Robin Hood – $18,700,000 – 2wks
Letters to Juliet – $9,100,000 – 2wks
Just Wright – $4,225,000 – 2wks
MacGruber – $4,100,000 – Opening
While I normally don’t show anything outside of the Top 5 in my Boxoffice report, its important for me to add MacGruber there. With the heavy marketing campaign on this, I just feel bad for MacGruber for its massive stumble at the boxoffice. I didn’t even go see it because I was not anticipating it even being worth my time and it would appear a number of others passed it by too. I can’t say the movie was bad, because I didn’t see it. I just didn’t see anything in the trailer that made me want to see it.
So what did you catch this weekend?
