Iron Man 2 was an easy bet to take the top spot this weekend as the official Summer Season kicks off. The studios knew it and didnt dare to put up anything of importance out this weekend to compete instead picking up the scraps are the bold front runners How to Train Your Dragon and Date Night, still holding a top 5 spot.
Boxoffice Mojo reports the estimates:
Iron Man 2 – $133,600,000 – Opening
A Nightmare on Elm Street – $9,170,000 – 2wks
How to Train Your Dragon – 6,760,000 – 7wks
Date Night – $5,300,000 – 5wks
The Back-Up Plan – $4,345,000 – 3wks
I was surprised to see J-Lo’s The Back-Up Plan still hanging in there, but the list beneath it explains its presence.
It’s no surprise that Iron Man 2 would completely dominate the boxoffice pulling in almost 15 times as much as the number two spot. Kicking off the summer season with a bang. It did manage to squeak past the $123m opening of the first Iron Man 2 years ago. And with the week earlier boxoffice release in the international markets, the film is already sitting at $327m Worldwide which is more than half of what the first film tapped out at with $585m.
It looks like Iron Man 2 could rake in more than its predacessor in the long run. Its off to a good start.
