Because James Cameron just can’t be out done by … James Cameron, he is re-releasing Avatar in a Special Edition that will feature a staggering 8 minutes of additional footage.
Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron today announced that AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION will be released in theaters August 27, in a limited engagement and exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D.
This version of Cameron’s history-making and groundbreaking epic will include more than eight minutes of new footage.
I really like when a film gets re-released so I can relive the excitement of that film in all its big screen glory. But of course there tends to be a decade or two between viewings for me to enjoy this. There is little nostalgia over a film that came out 8 months ago.
Now there is the 8 minutes of additional footage. Really? 8? This is what I am waiting for the extended version??
The stated reason for this release is that with the success of Avatar, there has been a boom in available 3D screens, and those poor souls who had to suffer through the traditional presentation of this mega-hit will now have the opportunity to further pad the boxoffice record set by this film.. er.. I mean they will have the opportunity to see it as Cameron intended. Of course he intended you to watch it 5 times, so this gives you that opportunity.
Its a complete money grab and as much as I did enjoy the film, and I did enjoy the 3d. I wont be going to see this again this soon.
Talk to me in 10 years when we can marvel that we used to have to wear glasses to watch 3d films.
