Kevin Smith tried his hand at directing a movie he didn’t write, and while it had some Smith flavour running down its crack, it just didn’t have the same charm as some of his other films.
So Smith has announced he will be creating Red State, his long awaited horror project – in a vacuum. No media publicity at all until he is ready to put the film up.
“For the first time since “Clerks” I’m trying to go, not unknown, but actors who aren’t like, you’re gonna see them on screen and not know their name…it’s a weird kind of in between neither place that I’m reaching for. It’s not complete unknown and it’s not remotely f*cking recognizable, name recognizable…It’s really tough to find actors whose name you don’t know. You know you can go to “Law and Order” and grab anybody from the cast and they’ve done five or six episodes and sh*t but you’d still recognize them and you’d be watching the movie and be like “that’s that dude, I’ve seen that dude on “Law and Order!” “
Smith has mastered the big screen independent film and while not all his movies are hits, I have to respect him for his efforts.
He manages to keep it on the level head and makes films for the art of making films (and money) and he appologizes for the stuff that doesn’t work but he isn’t afraid to try.
I am always going to look forward to his stuff, and this is no exception. I just have to know where he is going with all of this!
