WB Doesn’t want Reynolds to play Deadpool

looks like WB has got themselves a taste of Ryan Reynolds and they are just not willing to share. They are already greenlighting a Green Lantern sequel and rumour has it will be a trilogy, that could potentially pre-occupy Reynolds for the forseeable future.

But what does this mean for Deadpool.

io9.com says:

Geoff Johns dropped massive hints at Comic Con that the Green Lantern franchise could be a trilogy, and now the WB is writing a sequel for a film that hasn’t even finished editing. So what does that mean for Deadpool? Can Ryan Reynolds even spare time to play the Merc with a Mouth, if he still has to shoot two more Green Lantern films, especially at this grueling pace?

Last we heard Robert Rodriguez was being courted to direct the Deadpool movie, written by Zombieland duo Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. Ryan Reynolds even said that he talked to Wernick and Reese daily about the Deadpool project, so clearly his heart is in it.

Seems pretty clear that aside from WB wanting to take full advantage of the Green Lantern franchise while they feel they have a hit on their hands, they appear to be monopolizing the actor so he CANT play Deadpool.

The Deadpool film is in development, but no scheduled pre-production or filming as of yet. And it might be hard for them to do that if they want to keep Reynolds in the role.

Superhack Rob Liefeld and creator of Deadpool (but not the guy who made him cool) has been Twittering his frustration and saying he recognizes WB protecting their investment but if Fox doesn’t do something to get a Reynolds Deadpool going they should commit suicide.

I think Reynolds is better suited for Deadpool because of his snarky comedy chops, but I look forward to seeing what he brings to the table with Hal Jordan.

  1. Please, please, please let him play Deadpool still! I was not a huge fan of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but I loved Ryan Reynolds in it (and thought he was criminally underused). When I heard they would do a Deadpool movie, I was giddy with anticipation. This news, though, gets me worried. No matter what, it will be great to see Reynolds in all these movies (I think he’s the greatest actor currently in movies). I was just really hoping to see him as Deadpool in his own film. Let’s just hope they can hold off until his schedule opens up.

  2. There are other Smart-asses that could fit this role, and Besides, they fuckin’ sealed his mouth shut in that last poor excuse of a deadpool he did.

    1. And they also added the Self Healing factor from Wolverine. So I wonder, If he cuts his mouth open, will that scar heal itself every time he shuts his mouth?

      1. I think it’s already been stated that the Deadpool seen the Wolverine will not be the same as in the movie. That being said, Deadpool has always had his own version of a healing factor like Wolverine’s. It wasn’t added for the movie.

    2. The movie Deadpool was not the Deadpool they are proposing to go with in the movie. Weapon XI and Deadpool are two different things, even in the comics.

Even in the movie the actor who played Weapon XI was not Reynolds, so all they have to do is add one line of dialogue that says Weapon XI was not Wade Wilson, and its solved. Easy enough.

      1. Thank God for that, I dont want to see that version of Deadpool in any movie again, same for Reynolds for that matter. it’s not like replacing Tobey after spidey 2! and a hard PG-13 would be nice. Robert Rodriguez’s involvment dosen’t excite me like it used to anymore.that said this could be awesome or end up like Spawn. point is, this is one that is an aquired taste.

    3. Pman you are right, he does have his own healing factor in the Comics, but the mouth completely shut?? And I don’t remember about the XI experiment I thought they specifically said Deadpool in the wolverine movie, I might have made a mistake, didn’t like that movie anyways. I had no idea Ryan Reynolds was not the bald guy at the end, do you know if Ryan refused to do that scene this way? As it has been said before Ryan has a passion for the character, did he not do the scene because he didn’t agree with it? I’m asking Rodney because he seems to know more about this subject.

      1. In the movie the only connection we have to assume Wade was Deadpool is Stryker saying The only way to shut you up was to take away your mouth (or something along that line) and so we assume as much when Logan says “Wade, is that you?” and he doesn’t respond.

It wasn’t the same actor, there is only circumstantial evidence that says Weapon XI was Wade, and Wade never calls himself Deadpool. Thats the name Stryker gives Weapon XI.

Maybe Wade Wilson adopts the name because it sounds catchy. Weapon XI is not Wade Wilson as far as I am concerned.

      2. Are you sayin’ that Reynolds wasn’t Deadpool in the end fightin’ Sabretooth and Logan, that was Reynolds I thought, his eyes and abs certainly were his!

      3. From what I have read and understand Weapon XI was Wade Wilson, and Ryan Reynolds was Weapon XI in the standstill shots, it was the action and stunts that they used a different actor for, granted that was 90% of Deadpool’s screentime, but still Reynolds was the guy in the reveal shot of the character. Whether they have to retcon this or ignore it, I dont think is too big a deal to move forward with a Deapool story.

      4. It was clear in the movie that they are saying it is, but they never really came out and said it. And that makes it easy to pretend it wasn’t. One line of dialogue saying “That wasn’t me” would allow them to move forward and ignore all that Weapon XI thing.

The fans all want to see the Wade Wilson at the beginning of the movie, not the personality free freakshow at the end of it.

  3. I think WB is going to have a slight problem. I can see them keeping a few sets or develping sequels. I can see two sequels shot back to back. But not now. Aside from Reynolds, there are other actors who have signed on to other projects as well. It has a ripple effect. Actors can be replaced . The plan should have been known to all from the start.

The only small saving grace is that during the GL series they dive more into the GL Corps, and the Jordan character has his comics arc, passing the torch on down to Guy Gardner or John Stewart. I’m open to that possible outcome, although it may not appear to be the case.

  4. Deadpool is a smart mouth. A skilled actor can pull off that character. Get over your Ryan Reynolds crush for gods sake. Hey I have someone who is in the rise and has the look, Bradley cooper, the guy from A team and hangover. So far he has played smart ass guys, but playing a smart mouth assassin wouldn’t be that big of a stretch. On another note, Tarantino is rumored to make a Shadow Remake, I say scratch that. Give him Deadpool he’ll make it a hell of a movie.

    1. Taratino has already dismissed rumors that he’ll be making ‘The Shadow’. Why get him when you get Rodriguez (who’s already in talks). I don’t want a comic book film where it features 90% talking about pointless crap. Rodriguez would be perfect for the film. He can mix action, gore, and comedy that would be great for Deadpool.

      1. No to Bradley Cooper. If Reynolds isn’t cast in the role, then I’m not seeing this movie. True, any actor can be replaced, but what can’t be replaced is the passion Reynolds had for the character. All actors say “I’m a fan of the comics”, but Reynolds truly was a fan. He even worked with the writers to make sure they got it right (which according to Rodriguez, they did).

Anyway, I knew this would be an issue since it was announced a trilogy was planned to shoot back-to-back. What’s more is that Reynolds is also looking to star in another comic book film, R.I.P.D.

      2. Reynolds had passion for the character? he friggin had like 10 minutes screen time as Wilson in the whole movie! Looked like pretty much a walk thru to me.

      3. If knowing he worked with the writers Ion this film) to get it right, then I don’t know what does. Did Bale work with Nolan and Goyer to get the character right? No, as far as we know. Did Maguire work with Raimi to get Parker right (which they didn’t)? No.

Reynolds worked with the writers from ‘Zombieland’ (forget their names), so they the studio wouldn’t give another shitty X-men film. Like I said, Reynolds is actually a fan of the character, and that’s why his performance (no matter how much screen-time he got) worked.

      4. Reynolds has also said in many interviews that he was a fan of the character before the role was offered or considered to him.

He didn’t have to rush out to a comic shop to pick up issues to find out who he was playing.
