Summer DVD releases get a little dry, but we have at least one title this week that has my pulse leaping with nostalgic joy.
So lets take a look at what is available on retail shelves today!
THX 1138
The human race has been relocated to a underground city located beneath the Earth’s surface. In the underground city, the population are entertained by holographic TV which broadcasts sex and violence and robotic police force enforces the law. In the underground city, society controls all life, all citizens are drugged to control their emotions and their behavior and sex is a crime. Factory worker THX-1138 stops taking the drugs and he breaks the law when he finds himself falling in love with his room-mate LUH 3417 and is imprisoned when LUH 3417 is pregnant. Escaping from jail with illegal programmer SEN 5241 and a hologram named SRT, THX 1138 goes in search of LUH 3417 and escape to the surface, whilst being pursued by robotic policemen
A classic and the golden age of Papa Smurf himself. This was back when Lucas wasn’t just a good writer, he really made himself as a director.

Trying to recover from a sudden break-up, Jen Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl) believes she’ll never fall in love again. But when she reluctantly joins her parents on a trip to the French Riviera, Jen happens to meet the man of her dreams, the dashing, handsome Spencer Aimes (Ashton Kutcher). Three years later, her seemingly impossible wish has come true: she and Spencer are newlyweds living the ideal suburban life—that is, until the morning after Spencer’s 30th birthday when bullets start flying. Literally.
It wasn’t a great film, but it has its moments where you think Kutcher could actually be an action star. But you get over it. Rent it if you have to, or if its all that’s left.
MacGruber
Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.
I eventually got to seeing MacGruber late in the game and didn’t offer a review. I wasn’t that impressed and it fell into that category of Saturday Night Live skits turned Feature Films that I don’t care about. They were worried that this spoof of MacGyver was going to hurt a planned MacGyver film, but I dont think this is going to be an issue.
Solitary Man
Ben Kalmen (Michael Douglas), a fifty-something New Yorker and former successful car dealer, through his own bad choices lost his entire business.
When the film opens, Ben’s on the verge of a comeback, but some of the same motivations that led to his demise are threatening to take him down again. He’s divorced from Nancy, his college sweetheart and the one person who knows him better than anyone. Although he still finds the time to hang out with his daughter Susan and his adoring grandson, she breaks off contact when she discovers he’s seeing one of her friends. His girlfriend Jordan is the daughter of a very influential businessman who’s on the board of a major auto manufacturer.
If Ben can just keep his hubris in check for a little while longer, he will be back as big as ever. But circumstances place him in very close proximity with the one girl he shouldn’t touch, throwing everything into jeopardy.
Never got around to seeing this one, so it might get rented.
