Hunger Games Director Short List and Chloe Morentz as Katniss?

There is finally movement on the proposed Hunger Games movie that has been in radio silence almost since the rights were bought to be made into a feature film. Now as the young adult series author Suzanne Collins has finished the screenplay herself and we are on a deadline to announce the director. Gary Ross, Sam Mendes and David Slade are all up for the gig.

And it looks like the shortlist for their star Katniss Everdeen has only one name on it. Chloe Moretz!

io9.com says:

According to Deadline, there are three directors in the running to adapt the first book: Gary Ross (Pleasantville), Sam Mendes (American Beauty), and David Slade (30 Days Of Night). And the director will be chosen by the end of this week. The movie’s script is done — it was written by novelist Suzanne Collins herself, with a rewrite by Billy Ray.

As for who will play the all-important role of Katniss Everdeen, USA Today says there’s only one name on the shortlist: Chloe Moretz, who’s kind of cornered the market on dangerous girls lately by playing Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass and Abby in Let Me In.

I like the idea of David Slade who is no stranger to popular book adaptations recently handling Eclipse. But if he takes on the job, he will have to pull out of directing Wolverine 2. I think he might be a better fit here.

I couldn’t agree more that Chloe Moretz would be perfect for this role. Clearly she will have to toss aside the fair locks in favour of some darker hair tones but a wonderful special effect called hair dye is all she will need to nail this role.

She is a solid actress and I can easily see her as Katniss in this.

I am a big fan of the series and just started reading the third book Mockingjay which was just released last month.

  1. I haven’t seen Kick Ass but as one commenter said, I could see her (just from looks) as Prim. I would imagine someone with a bit more muscle (to hold up for all her hunting and carrying it back), as well as someone hwo would be able to blend in but be light enough to climb trees.

  2. NO!!! NO!!! She is too girly and too young to play Katniss and she deffinetly isn’t my choice for this role cuz then i would be better Katniss than her and I’m just 12!!!

  3. I DO NOT think that Chloe should pay Katniss’ part in the movie. She’s a wonderful actess, but Katniss is not girly. She’s the man in the house, and Chloe was seems like she wouldn’t fit the part.

  4. Chloe Moretz needs a figure of a 16 yr old everyone. Hmmm …I don’t know if she’ll develop in time. If she does get the lady lumps in the back and in the front then it’s all good. Solid Actress ….lots of fun….hopefully this isn’t PG and a “Unrated Version” in the DVD release with swearing, more blood and guts, and some partial nudity would suffice. Looking forward to it!!!

  5. My pick is Chole. She has the smarts, the acting ability, and the training as an action star. In a few days she’ll turn 14. Watching her on a variety of interview shows a mature actress as well as one who has grown a lot physically.
As Katniss she would go a long way in insuring the success of the films.

  6. Hell no! Chloe Moretz is ABSOLUTELY wrong for this role. She’s too young, too inexperienced, and I think many fans will be diappointed that she looks and sounds nothing like an imagined Katniss. She’s a fair to middling actress as far as I’m concerned. She seems a bit like a try-hard to me.

  7. I think katniss is just a wonderful character and no matter what someone will disagree on who should play her. Everybody has a different picture of her. I personaly don’t think chloe should get the role she seems mature but she’s just too young and girly. Katniss is a sixteen year old girl taking on the role of man of the house not a 13 year old girly girl barely in her teens.

  8. I hear a lot about the book, but nothing about the screen play. If I remember it’s this that calls the shots. And even this can change daily. Instead in the comment section I hear “don’t like this as it’s not in the book ”

Goodness don’t we understand it’s not the book, it’s the screenplay!

      1. AHHH no. NO. not Chloe Moretz!! I thought Jodelle Ferland would for sure pull it out on the shortlist and be Katniss. Ugh!! NO ! >( Thats Not Cool.. :P Makin me not even want to see this movie. AND I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES! HOW COULD I NOT SEE IT!! ?? AHH GRR. >O im sorry. i just. this. isnt.. RIGHT. excuse me while i go have a seizure over this… not cool. :P

  9. I wouldn’t place the series among the best I’ve ever read, but it was definitely enjoyable and has huge potential on the big screen. I of course don’t know, but I would just bet they don’t get the budget to do this thing right. There are some serious sci-fi and fantasy scenes in these books that could look incredible if taken seriously. Let’s hope they go for a franchise instead of a one hit like Eragon.

  10. One of the best books I’ve ever read. Non stop action and well thought out plot. We’re lucky the author wrote the screen play. Even though it is a young adult book don’t let that scare you away.
