With Mel Gibson getting replaced on the set of the Hangover 2 after his involvement received backlash from a lot of the cast and crew, we half expected a drunken roadside rant in frustration, but instead Gibson expressed his disappointment and left it alone.
But his replacement Liam Neeson was not aware he was replacing anyone, and when he found out it was his collegue Mel Gibson, he made a phone call to make sure this wouldn’t affect their friendship.
Neeson had a “very pleasant” conversation with Mel after accepting the role. Mel told him that “we’re all cool”. [Mel Gibson] harbors no hard feelings about being replaced in THE HANGOVER 2. Neeson himself said that when he got the job, he didn’t realize that it was initially meant for Gibson.
I think that is a pretty classy move on Neeson’s part.
Despite Gibson’s public image, Neeson still regards him as a friend and out of courtesy called him up to talk about the replacement. I imagine Gibson is still upset about the situation as a whole, but he isn’t going to hold Neeson responsible for it.
