James Cameron, as the new Godfather of 3D has spoken his mind about the Post Production 3D Conversion method.
He says the only time its acceptable is when there is no other option.
“My personal philosophy is that post conversion should be used for one thing and one thing only – which is to take library titles that are favorites that are proven, and convert them into 3D – whether it’s Jaws or ET or Indiana Jones, Close Encounters… or Titanic. Unless you have a time machine to go back and shoot it in 3D, you have no other choice. The best alternative is if you want to release a movie in 3D – make it in 3D.”
I like how he put that, but in part I disagree.
Everything he says makes sense. But that of course can change when they invent a method to effectively make 3D post conversion better, then it will change the equation.
But at the same time, I am taking this statement as a grain of salt. It is convenient that he would join the status quo condemning post production 3D with a statment that also allows him to still move forward converting his own Titanic to 3D.
Its just a matter of time until someone makes it work, and when we wont need glasses anymore. Its all a work in progress, just like any special effect.
