Y The Last Man is one of my all time favourite comic book series, I own all the trades and they are sitting on my book shelf between my The Walking Dead series and my Cable and Deadpool series. The book is intense, dramatic, and hilarious. It centres around a young man named Yorick and his beloved monkey Ampersand, who are the last two male species on earth after a tragic disease of some sort kills off every male in the entire world.
The series is amazing and I recommend anyone who enjoys comics or a good story to go and pick up a trade it’s like 12 bucks and will be well worth your money.
Since Y The Last Man is such a well liked story and has sold a lot of copies over it times it is no wonder that theres been on and off buzz about adapting it to the big screen. In recent news it seems that Louis Leterrier is saying he would like to direct the film in an interview with MTV.
“DJ Caruso was supposed to do it with Shia Labeouf, and that sort of went on and was over, so I went in and said, ‘Please, please let me have it!'” he explained.
“I’m surprised that it hasn’t gotten made yet,” Leterrier told MTV News. “The first time I read it, I was in France and doing my little movies, and I didn’t think I would ever have access to these kinds of movies. Midway through ‘Clash of the Titans,’ I was like, ‘What’s going on with ‘Y The Last Man’?’ I called one of the producers and asked what was going on, and he said it was available. I said, ‘Let’s go!'”
“I like the idea of a TV show,” he continued. “You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don’t need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies. Frankly, with HBO and Showtime and cable shows, the DVD box sets and all, you can have a product that doesn’t make you feel like as soon as it’s projected, it’s thrown away. It’s really a piece of art.”
I like the way this guy thinks, and I did enjoy his adaption of The Incredible Hulk. The part that I agree with him the most is possibly making it into a TV show, I feel like these days comic book movies are being made right left and centre but no one really thinks about how much they are butchering the original material. No matter how hard you try chopping up a 10 Trade series into a Trilogy or possibly just one film is a disgrace to the original material. Those books are written to evolve the characters over time and these characters evolve over a multiple year span.
That’s why I am so proud of the decision to make The Walking Dead into a TV series because it just made sense, you have to slowly watch Ricks character evolve into the person he becomes later on in the books and if you try doing that in a film its going to come off fake. Also, Y The Last Man deals with some really adult issues and would probably get taken out if they made it into a film.
I really do hope they turn this series into a TV show and that it turns out as well as The Walking Dead seems to be doing.
