MTV cornered Robert Zemeckis and asked him how he felt about Zack Snyder directing the upcoming Superman reboot considering he was on the list as well. Zemeckis clarifies that he wasn’t competing with Snyder and in fact claims he “passed on that faster than a speeding bullet”
Zemeckis also revealed that it didn’t take him long to say no..
“I passed on that faster than a speeding bullet,”
“When they asked if I wanted to make the, what is it, seventeenth version of ‘Superman,’
‘No, I don’t think so.’”
Does he think he is “above” doing a Superman film? Does Zemeckis hate Superman? Or is he feel that he wouldn’t be a good fit and pulled out of consideration to do us all a favour? The director is clearly comfortable with the whimsy of magic and the lighter side of science fiction as well, so it puzzles me that he was so quick to dismiss this so casually.
And 17th verison of Superman? Maybe if we try to split kryptonian hairs and make a nuclear man… Obviously he was trying to be witty, but how many versions of Superman there are out there is hardly motivation not to be involved.
All the versions of Superman that have made it to the big and small screen, live action and animated, were relevant to their time, and well accepted by the fan base. Why would Zemeckis take such a harsh stand against doing a Superman movie.
Maybe we will just thank Zod that we now have a director who is passionate about the character and not getting Zemeckis and then reading the story today quoting him as saying he took the job because he lost a bet.
