While boxoffice numbers do not lie, clearly this 3D craze is far from over. I will admit that the technology is hit and miss, but it is the wild acceptance of the format that is encouraging the improvement of the effect.
And it looks like Apple is attempting to develop a holographic technology that will allow for 3D without the glasses!
Steve Jobs computing giant has gotten a patent for developing holographic TV, cinema, and computer screen technology. The screen works by having pixel-sized domes that deflect separate images to the left and right eye, creating a stereoscopic effect. Apple is also developing a system that will track the movements of multiple viewers and their eyes as to make the deflection of the image more accurate to each audience member and look good from all angles.
Ok, just so we are clear, there are also patents filed for devices that allow you to read minds, see through walls and cryogenic freezing.
That being said, I do find it very appealing that the current 3D trend may eventually deliver us 3D tv that will work without glasses. Hell, they already have a Nintendo DS that promises 3D without glasses, so whats the big deal?
