Ron Howard has been quietly adapting Stephen King’s classic series The Dark Tower. Its barely off the ground at all, but as unconventional as the series is, how he hopes to deliver the series will be unique as well.
Howard intends to create the series as a bridging of a film trilogy and a tie in TV series. Exactly how it will be broken up is still in question, but it seems that isn’t stopping them from exploring the leading role. And rumour has it that Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, and Jon Hamm are all being considered.
Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, and Jon Hamm. All of these actors are stars, they’d all give the role a nice weight, and – perhaps most importantly – they’d attract the kind of budget required to pull off what Howard and producer-writer Akiva Goldsman have in mind.
Out of that list I would like to see either Viggo Mortensen or Daniel Craig get the role.
In the dark and surreal novels, the Gunslinger Roland Deschain is a very cold and harsh man, and I think Mortensen and Craig have what it takes to carry that presence.
That being said, this is going to be one hell of an audience to try and please. The books are hard to get through for the harsh content and very unconventional fantasy worlds let alone doing that right so that they entertain on screen.
I have a hard time thinking of these books as Film adaptations, but I am very eager to see what they do with it.
