George Lucas to Digitally Resurrect Hollywood Legends?

Seems that Brit comedian Mel Smith has spilled the beans on George Lucas’ secret plans to make a movie entirely out of deceased actors.

Moviefone quotes:

British comedian and actor Mel Smith laid a bizarre tidbit at the foot of the Daily Mail, saying that ‘Star Wars’ maestro George Lucas has “… been buying up the film rights to dead movie stars in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together in a movie, so you’d have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck appear alongside today’s stars.”

Ok, so it might have just been an off the cuff statement and the idea is hardly confirmed here by a Comedian saying something wild and amusing.

Later in the interview Smith scolds Lucas blaming Papa Smurf for not understanding comedy, and that he “is obsessed with CGI” and uses far too much of it in his films.

So while this might just be a gag, the scary part is that it is very plausible to think that it could happen.

I am reminded of the 2002 film Sim0ne, where a desperate film producer uses a computer to digitally create a star which rockets in popularity and becomes a sensation that everyone thinks is a real person. It made me wonder if we were really that far off of seeing digitally created actors – and while Avatar was a special effect, the movie essentially did just that.

So while people may think it is blasphemy to replace real people with purely digitally created personalities, and even more perverse to apply it to deceased stars of yesteryear, you have to admit there is a curious note resonating there that makes you wonder if we are inevitably going to get rid of actors altogether?
