Dreamworks seemed to be in the Pixar shadow for a long time always hoping to achieve something their rivals seemed to do with ease, but lately they have managed to find themselves some hits and shaping an identity for the studio.
But not straying too far from the bullpen, it looks like Dreamworks is playing it safe, and will be focusing on releasing sequels to its biggest franchises instead of making new properties.
Obsessed with Film quotes Dreamworks Boss Jeffrey Katzenberg:
“So today I can tell you pretty succinctly where Madagascar goes. Ultimately they will come back to New York, and they will come to terms with that, which they will do in this next chapter. Because of the way that movie concludes there’s probably one more for them…”
”Kung Fu Panda actually has 6 chapters to it, and we’ve mapped that out over the years. How to Train Your Dragon is at least three: maybe more, but we know there are a least three chapters to that story. There are actually 8 books.”
Madagascar is a fun series, and I would like more. Kung Fu Panda I ended up enjoying more than I thought I would, but it was How to Train Your Dragon that completely blew me away.
However Katz references the Horrendous Hiccup the Third’s Book series as justification to make more Dragon movies, but honestly the film differs dramatically from the book plot and characters, so I wouldn’t hold your breath on following the novels. The movie has taken a life of its own.
Dreamworks has certainly upped their game lately, and I look forward to seeing what they put out.
