Duncan Jones wants to Direct World of Warcraft

Sam Raimi has been attached to the World of Warcraft film for so long now, but project after project keeps getting in the way of the director moving forward with it. And just recently his involvement with a Wizard of Oz prequel has put it on the back burner once more.

I don’t know why this film is taking so long to get off the ground. But maybe Raimi will stay on as producer and they let someone else direct. And it seems Moon director Duncan Jones is asking for a request to join the raid group.

“I’m hugely jealous of Sam Raimi. I really believe ‘World of Warcraft’ could be the launch of computer games as good films. And from the little I’ve read of interviews with him, the way he’s approaching it makes so much sense. It’s what I was talking about – it’s not worrying about how the game plays, it’s about creating the world of the game and investing the audience in that world.”

I like his approach to the film focusing on the world that is Warcraft instead of trying to adapt the gameplay to the vast lore already presented in the game.

World of Warcraft has become such a media giant even outside of the massively popular MMO game and is ripe with storytelling opportunities.

I really hope they do move forward with this, and Jones is as good a director as any to bring the story to life. I would rather Raimi was directing, but I am starting to wonder if he even wants to.

  1. Trust me Blizzard knows what they are doing. They still have 2 more expansions that will come out before there new MMO is announced. the time line is still very much in order because there is about 4 years left on there initial plan of when they will launch the movie.

LVL 85 warrior tank…wooot raiding starts on the 4th!

  2. I just feel that people need to look at lord of the rings and see how much you can do if you just dive into the fantasy realm and do it right.
People want to be taken away, some of the favorite films transport me to a world that is beyond belief (see never ending story and star wars).

Movies are escapism and if you just go in an create this world people will pick it up, now if someone will make some R.A. Salvatore movies and bring Drizzt to the big screen then i can die a happy geek!

  3. There’s more to Warcraft then just the World of Warcraft game, it was a fully fleshed out franchise before this game was even made. There are many books out that show the rich world and characters that are all there. I suggest if you haven’t read any of the books that you do so, of course they are very enlightening if you actually play the games as well.

  4. Zowie Bowie makes great indie film. Moon was excellent for was it was. But Big budget fare, not so much. About 6/10 of people I have talked to about Moon, don’t get it.
