‘Alien’ Prequel Dead.

The much anticipated Alien prequel is dead, BUT much of its script will be repurposed into a brand new Ridley Scott directed project, titled Prometheus. Noomi Rapace of ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ film series will star and it’s script is being written by Damon Lindelof and Scott, based off the original script by Jon Spaihts. Its even got a release date, March 9th 2012.
From Hollywood Reporter

“While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place,” said Scott in a statement. “The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”

“In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots,” stated Lindelof. “I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects.”

Wow. I am totally in shock. Fox have ALLOWED this to happen?? An original film rather then a prequel to a franchise with such a legacy?? With this and all the birds and fish that have been dying, I’m guessing that the world is ABOUT TO END! In all seriousness though, this is fantastic. As much as I wanted to see Ridley revisit the Alien universe, Its just nice to hear about original films breaking through the franchises and brand names that already exist. I know there has been plenty of original movies lately but I worry about hollywood sometimes.
I only saw the Alien series last year, so I’m relatively new, and although I loved (some of) them, I’m not particularly bothered that the series is being left behind in favour of this. Hopefully those rumours of HR Giger (who designed most of the original film and the iconic xenomorphs themselves) being involved were true, and he’s still involved, because his visuals could potentially make this stand out, then again his involvment might also make it very similar aesthetically to Alien..

Well… this news has put the film on my radar. I’m far more interested now then I was when it was an Alien prequel.

What about you guys, my hunger for your opinions must be satiated!
