SNL current cast member Andy Samberg is teaming up with SNL alumni Adam Sandler in a new film, “I Hate You Dad.” The comedy stars Sandler as Samberg’s father, and
The story centers on a father who moves in on the eve of his son’s wedding and promptly begins feuding with the bride-to-be. Sandler would play the dad, with Samberg as the son, even though less than 12 years separate the two in real life. Dad is still in the development stages, and no director is on board, but the two actors are attached.
Sandler is hit or miss for me. Sometimes I find him very funny, sometimes I feel like I’m getting the exact same comedy routine from him that he does in every single movie and it’s repetition is just tiresome. A lot of people talk about the amazing performance he gave in “Funny People,” and I just smile, and quietly wonder if they saw the same piece of crap film I saw. “Grown Ups” was even worse.
Samberg, on the other hand, really makes me laugh. I hope that his youthful, and modern, comedic stylings can reinvigorate Sandler. This pairing could be really great if they can make it work. I know there is some concern about the two of them only being 12 years apart but playing a father and son, but we should remember, Sean Connery was only 12 years Harrison Ford’s senior in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” and it’s one of the most memorable father/son pieces ever made.
Does anyone else share my hopefulness?
