Paramount and Hasbro were hard at work looking at director candidates to replace Stephen Sommers. Thus far F. Gary Gray and Jon M. Chu have been named as possible front runners…The screenplay for G.I. Joe 2 has been completed by scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick
I’m skeptical on the script being ‘finished’ – as there is no director officially named. Things usually change when directors get attached. In addition, chances are it will be in the first film’s tone, so ‘finished’ might not mean ‘great’ but for what the scribes were paid to write.
If I had a choice between the two directors considered, I’d pick Gray, who is a proven action director that can make it fun (Italian Job) and dramatic (The Negotiator , the recent Law Abiding Citizen) as opposed to Chu, who last directed Justin Bieber’s concert film. But it’s really anybody’s game. I’m surprised Sam Raimi or Louis Letterier isn’t in the running.
But Step Up D helmer Chu *does* have some idea where he’d like to go. Movieweb gives the related news:
He very much wants to direct the sequel, and hopes to bring both the heart and the punch back to this franchise.
In the Movieweb interview, Chu elaborates by statig the first film was too ‘kidsie’ and needed more tough guy (and tough gal) type action.
Who do you want to see direct GI Joe 2?
