Before I dive in here, let me just say that not all Post 3D is going to be Clash of the Titans. There is always room for improvement.
But then also let me say, that a sequel to Clash of the Titans NEEDS to be shot in 3D if they are going to make it 3D. Just out of principal.
But no… They are going to do a Post Conversion 3D sequel just to stick it to the man.
Moviefone quotes director Jonathan Liebesman
“I think what you have to remember is the first film was neither shot nor edited with 3D in mind. It was shot as a 2D movie and edited as a 2D film, and they decided to convert it with six or seven weeks to go until release, which is insane; the technology was not there. That’s why we’re conceiving it from the start, from the ground up, in 3D, editing in 3D for 3D.”
“The big question was to shoot native 3D or not. I tested a lot of digital cameras, and quite frankly, because I’m going for a sort of much grittier, grounded look in ‘Clash 2,’ the look I want is almost ‘Gladiator’ with fantastical creatures in it, I found that the characteristics of film were more what I was going for.”
“I didn’t want to convert, but Warner Brothers showed me how far conversion’s come. You’ve got Chris Nolan doing ‘Inception,’ converting the DVD, you’ve got ‘Harry Potter’ being converted, ‘Star Wars’ being converted, so the conversion process has improved dramatically in the past two years. I’m comfortable with the conversion. But for the genre, I just feel like I have to shoot on film; I don’t know, it just has that texture.”
Now its not a suprise that the hasty 3D conversion of Clash of the Titans was a money grab, but it still hurts to hear it. Espeically when they rushed it so bad that Post Conversion 3D will ALWAYS hang its head in the shadow of that film’s shortcomings.
The bigger surprise is that they would bother to attempt a post conversion of the sequel that has a lot of stink to outrun.
Its like in those movies where the goodguy has a gun and has to face off against the badguy who is unarmed. In your heart you are just screaming “SHOOT HIM – YOU WIN!!” And then just to prove a point, the dumabss goodguy throws caution to the wind and discards the gun out of honour or something. You know he shouldn’t have taken that risk, but it makes the victory that much sweeter.
So here we have Clash of the Titans stinking up the place with its really shoddy Post3D, and just to prove a point, they are going to make Clash 2/Wrath the same way, just to sweeten that it can be done.
I don’t think its a bad idea, but its a bad idea…
On one hand, this is the ONE franchise that shouldn’t be taking this chance. But on the other hand, if he is right and the Post3D is improving this guy will get to do one serious happy dance of “suck it” if he pulls it off.
