Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment have signed Michael Ealy (Takers) and his beautiful eyes to play the male lead opposite franchise star Kate Beckinsale in Underworld 4: New Dawn.
I even found this set picture of what appears to be Beckinsale in full costume performing one of those death defying rooftop drops.
Ealy is hit-or-miss with me, and really doesn’t add anything to this film just yet. I didn’t mind him in Takers, but really wasn’t blown away by his performance either.
The plot deals with Selene waking up one day and discovering she has a troublesome teenage daughter that deals with a bit more than just the typical teenage puberty issues and has to come to terms with being half lycan half vampire. Ealy’s character is that of a police detective that initially hunts Selene but eventually finds out she’s not all that bad and wants to help her protect her daughter from being exploited and creating a super hybrid army.
This sounds very “Paul W.S. Anderson-ish” to me but the screenplay is actually from writer extraordinaire J. Michael Straczynski. That alone makes me a bit more intrigued in addition to the fact that they are coming off the positive reception of the last film, but I am a bit disappointed that they are returning to the present with this follow up as I really really liked the last film and it’s period setting. But then again they didn’t have tight black leather back then…
