Al Pacino joins Gotti

I have issues with this upcoming movie. On paper this movie should be quite memorable as the team working on this movie has assembled a pretty interesting cast of former hot commodities, with news spreading that Al Pacino will be the latest name added to the list.

Al Pacino is joining the cast of Fiore Films’ Gotti: Three Generations, the true-life crime saga, which is set to star John Travolta as John Gotti Sr.

Pacino, who knows his way away mob families having starring in The Godfather trilogy, will play Gambino crime family underboss Neil Dellacroce, an associate and mentor to Gotti Sr.

The project reteams Pacino with Barry Levinson, who has stepped in to direct, and who recently guided Pacino through the Emmy-winning HBO telefilm You Don’t Know Jack.

I love/hate the cast of this movie but I’m really hoping to see everyone knock this one out the park. The story of John Gotti really resonates with New Yorkers like myself thanks to all the unrelenting headlines by the press during the various criminal trials with this family. It’s hard to put into words but when you see them and their personalities you can see that they’re soooo New York. I like that.

I’m still a little indifferent about Travolta in the lead to play John Gotti. I occasionally like Travolta and believe that he’s got the ability to play a good mob boss, but he just hasn’t given that type of performance in years so I’m a little apprehensive.

Then there’s the rest of the cast in this movie:

Gotti Sr.’s wife Victoria – Kelly Preston;
Angel Gotti, the daughter of John Sr. and Victoria – Travoltas’ daughter Ella Bleu Travolta;
Gotti Sr.’s associate Angelo Ruggiero – Joe Pesci;
and Kim Gotti, John Gotti Jr.’s wife – Lindsay Lohan.

I think it’s a interesting choice to incorporate Travolta’s real life family in key roles in the Gotti family. I think it could add a level of chemistry needed to give us a good movie but it does seem a little strange having the Travolta’s just hop in the shoes of the Gotti’s.

Al Pacino on the other hand is washed up. I’ll give him a little bit of a pass because I havent seen “You don’t Know Jack” and I heard good things but I really am disappointed that we haven’t seen better from this guy in recent memory.

Joe Pesci only does 1 movie every few yrs. He’s fine and I’m looking forward to seeing the little guy on screen again.

There’s few things I can say about Lohan that haven’t already been said. I’ll try to be optimistic.

Aside from the director bailing on this movie pretty late in the game, this one has a lot of potential to be a really good mob movie. It also has the potential to be a disaster of epic TMZ proportions! I’m rooting for this one to be good but there’s some writing on the wall, I just can’t make out what it says.
