Sgt. Rock And Easy Company Return From Development Limbo

Warner Bros. is drafting Guy Ricthie to the front lines for ‘Sgt. Rock’, the DC Comics WWII war hero. ‘Rock’ is one of those comics characters who has had movie rumors and a whole backlog of screenplays never filmed. Maybe that’s about to change with Ritchie.
First Showing gives us the story:

Warner Bros. wants Ritchie back on the project and hopes set it up as his next feature after finishing up Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. And the good news is Ritchie is apparently already supervising a new draft of the screenplay which will actually retain the original setting and has Sgt. Rock facing off against German troops back in WWII.

I for one am happy. Not that I’m the biggest Guy Ritchie fan, but that WB isn’t going to treat the property like they treated Jonah Hex. I always liked the film adaptations of DC/Vertigo line that did not feature “superheroes”. Not that I wouldn’t like a Flash or Plastic Man film one day, but this is one of those characters which has many advantages. Look at it this way: he’s more adaptable to screens. If the character wasn’t from the comics, the character would still work.
So why has it taken so long to get this far? My best guess is that he’s from the comics, and thus, some folks at WB treat it like Jonah Hex.

Getting Ritchie is a good step forward. Francis Lawrence (Constintine) was previously attatched to the project. He was going to set Rock and Easy Co. into the near future to address “contempary issues”. See what I mean?
