Eddie Murphy to host the Academy Awards

Eddie Murphy was a comedic legend in the 80’s and early 90’s. That’s it. Seriously, he was. Then things started going downhill for the actor as he began making an increasing number of films that were targeting younger audiences. Most people I know refuse to watch any of his outings in theaters or home releases due to the unfunny nature of the films he starred. Not too long ago the actor vowed to return to form and began planning a return to form which has yet to come to fruition. Today we learn that very same actor has been confirmed to host 84th Annual Academy Awards:

We’ve been hearing rumors about Eddie Murphy possibly hosting the Oscars, but now Academy Awards producers Brett Ratner and Don Mischer have confirmed that the comedian will in fact the host of the 84th annual Oscar ceremony.

This doesn’t as much of a surprise since Murphy is the star of Ratner’s latest film, the comedy “Tower Heist.” This will be the actors first time hosting the Academy Awards. He was nominated for an Oscar in 2006 for his supporting role in “Dreamgirls.”

Actually, this is a surprise. This is a big surprise and I’m actually a little excited about the possibilities of a funny Eddie Murphy hosting the awards. Don’t get me wrong, I very well remember that the only time this guy has made me laugh in the last 10yrs is while portraying a cartoon donkey and even those instances were usually just chuckles that were still just too far and between to give the actor that much credit. But I want to believe that the guy is genuinely interested in getting his act together and that this may be the platform for him to re-introduce the new and improved Eddie Murphy.

Unfortunately it’s also a 50/50 situation. This is either going to be really really good, or so bad that it hurts. I’m on the fence but I’ll try to maintain optimism until we see the actual show.
