Mortal Kombat getting movie reboot

Remember those Mortal Kombat webisodes that were all the rage over the summer? Well, thanks to their success it looks like the movie franchise will be brought back thanks to the success of the popular web series.

The film, which New Line Cinema is pushing forward, will be based on a screenplay by Mortal Kombat: Rebirth writer Oren Uziel. No casting news yet, but it’s safe to assume that none of the original cast from the web series will return, due to a much bigger budget this time around. If you’ve seen the web series before, then you know that it was big on taking the mythology and giving it a gritty realistic makeover while staying faithful to all the fan favorite material. Plus, for the small budget they had to work with, the fight choreography and explosive action scenes were pretty darn cool.

This is really exciting news as most were simply happy that the web series found funding and took comfort in the possibility that they would all be collected on a DVD. Seriously, videogame adaptations haven’t had the best luck in the world of cinema and the web series came at the right time to show that a different and better approach to the series could produce a quality and entertaining film.

I’m a little excited about this news and I really think that this may be the opportunity to buck the trend of bad videogame movies. Aside from Paul Anderson’s work, few movies have been recognized as “decent” let alone enjoyable or even profitable. A big part about the series I liked was the cast. The cast really delivered when it came to portraying my favorite characters in the web series and I hope that some, if not all, make the transition to the feature film but with a bigger budget I wouldn’t be surprised if a few “household friendly” names end up in the credits at some point.

Yes, this movie is ‘radar’ approved.
